Researchers may have found a way to stave off pancreatic cancer.

A recent study shows daily low-dose aspirin appears to reduce risk of the cancer by nearly half.

The study out of China is not without limitations, yet there is optimism, said Dr. Victoria Manax Rutson, chief medical officer of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in Manhattan Beach, California.“I think any positive results that we’ve seen, we are always very excited,” Manax Rutson said. “This is a disease with a very united community and very proud if any advancements are being made.”

In addition, researchers at Arizona State University reported last week they have developed a blood test that can pinpoint a protein that is a marker for pancreatic cancer, according to the university. The ability to accurately detect the protein could become a way to diagnose the cancer in early stages.

Pancreatic cancer is now the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, according to 2017 data from the American Cancer Society. The deadliest is lung cancer, followed by colorectal cancer.

There will be more than 53,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer this year and 43,000 deaths.

The cancer that is so challenging to treat took the lives recently of actors Richard Hatch and John Hurt.

“You join a fraternity no one wants to be in,” said Fernando Licopoli, 72, of Fort Myers.

He was fortunate. His pancreatic cancer was detected before it had the chance to spread to his lymph nodes. He had surgery and chemotherapy. He was 65 when he was diagnosed in 2009.
